Kanpur and Thane sit at opposite ends of the country’s map, separated by nearly 1,400 kilometres, two languages, and two entirely different rhythms of life. Yet on the 3rd of November, both cities converged quietly at The Byke, Suraj Plaza, on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road, for Shikha and Akshay’s engagement.

Shikha grew up in Kanpur, in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, where weddings run on an entirely different calendar of rituals than Maharashtra’s. Akshay, on the other hand, is Thane through and through — a chartered accountant by profession, the kind of person who spends his working hours reconciling ledgers to the last rupee and finds calm in precision. It’s an unlikely but oddly fitting pairing: a bride who crossed an entire country to be here, and a groom whose day job runs on exactness meeting a ceremony built entirely on emotion, spontaneity, and the happy chaos of two families meeting for the first time.

The Byke’s Suraj Plaza banquet space, tucked along Ghodbunder Road, gave the evening its backdrop — elegant without being overwrought, spacious enough for both families to spread out and still find each other in the crowd. Shikha’s side brought a distinctly North Indian energy to the proceedings, while Akshay’s Thane relatives brought their own warmth and customary sakharpuda traditions. Watching both families pick up each other’s customs in real time, mid-ceremony, was one of the quieter joys of documenting this one.

The ring exchange itself unfolded exactly as it should — a room full of applause, a few nervous laughs from both Akshay and Shikha, and the kind of eye contact no amount of camera work can manufacture. Their engagement at Suraj Plaza was the first evening of many where two very different upbringings will learn to become one shared story.
