In Bhayandarpada, a quiet Agri Koli hamlet tucked into Thane’s coastal belt, Pournima grew up amid salt pans and paddy fields, where the rhythm of the tides shaped the rhythm of daily life. Hers was a family that still sang the old Dhavale songs at every wedding in the lane, still walked to the Ekvira Devi temple before any big decision, still remembered which aunt ground the turmeric and which uncle brought the mango leaves. Pournima carried that inheritance quietly — in the way she draped her nauvari, in the unhurried warmth she offered guests, in her deep respect for rituals other communities have long since set aside.

Fifty kilometres away, in Dombivali — itself an old Agri Koli stronghold — lived Aditya. Dombivali’s Agri families built their lives on land their grandfathers cultivated long before the town became a suburb of glass and concrete, and Aditya grew up with the same customs stitched into his childhood: haldi ceremonies at home rather than banquet halls, mamas who still insist on cutting the mango branch themselves, dhavale sung slightly off-key by uncles who refuse to stop trying.

When their families’ elders sat down to plan the wedding, there was an instant, easy recognition — two households who spoke the same dialect of ritual, even though they’d never met before. The haldi, held at Pournima’s home in Bahyandarpada on the 6th of May, was exactly as Agri Koli haldi ceremonies should be: turmeric passed hand to hand among women who have done this a hundred times before, laughter louder than any speaker system, and enough playful smearing of paste to leave everyone equally yellow by the end of it. Aditya’s own haldi in Dombivali carried the same unmistakable energy hours earlier, before the ceremonial paste made its way, as tradition demands, to the bride’s home.
